Ten Things to Tell your Dentist on your next Dental Check Up

A trip to the dentist is certainly not something most people look forward to, however, you can keep the number of visits to a minimum by following the standard procedure of maintenance: brushing, flossing and dental check-ups every six months .  Dental check-ups are what I wish to speak about in this article to ensure a good doctor - patient relationship. As in any relationship of worth, honest communication is essential. Honest communication tells me that you trust me as your dental professional and allows me to tailor your check-up to address your specific and individual concerns. So, what TEN things do I need you to tell me, your dentist, when you arrive for your next dental check-up? 1 . Provide name and phone number of your regular family physician, should I need to contact him. 2 . Advise if you are allergic to any anesthetic medications I would be administering for routine dental work. 3 . Make sure I am aware of diabetic disease, as this disease does increase...

Did Eric Gordon Lose his Tooth? (Mouthguards are essential!)

Image
“It cracked in half,” he said. “I’m going to get it capped. No biggie. I mean, it was painful. I had a little headache, but I was still gonna play.” This could’ve been avoided!   If only he had been wearing a mouthguard.   Mouthguards are an essential piece of equipment for anyone, young or old, playing any kind of contact sport.   They act like a shock absorber, both spreading the force over a larger area and increasing the time for the peak force to occur. Dissipating the energy of the blow over a larger area and longer time reduces its effect preventing or vastly reducing any injury. With no mouthguard, a blow to the lower face sends shock waves through the skull. A direct impact can fracture the front teeth.   A mouthguard can be custom fitted to provide maximum protection.   An over the counter (boil and bite)will work better than no mouthguard, but one custom made by your dentist will fit better, be more comfortable, last longer and can com...

Are DIY Dental Braces a Good Idea?

A lot of new orthodontic treatments are gaining popularity. You may have heard of   these Invisalign copycats which aim to avoid seeing the dentist at all.  Besides the dangers of "do-it-yourself" dentistry, we ask, why avoid the dentist?    Invisalign   visits are among the easiest visits you'll ever have at the dentist.  As Dr Michael Saba of The Laser Dental Group states "When you arrive, you aren't in pain. You don't have to get numb, so no needle and no after-effects of the anesthesia.  Most times your visit is done in under 20 minutes.  And the end result is a beautiful smile! "Dr Saba is an Invisalign Certified Specialist who works in both the Union and Westfield offices. "So to sum up, the visits are quick, pain-free, non-invasive and have an excellent, completely supervised outcome.  What's not to love?  That's a visit to the dentist that anyone can get behind."  Give our office a call for a cons...

Tooth Shedding

"Mama my tooth came out!" Photo All Rights Reserved* "Mama my tooth came out" are words that parents hear many times,  20 times to be exact.  Children start shedding their baby teeth at age 5 or 6 normally the front teeth are the first to go.  We have a wonderful interactive Dental Developmental Chart on our website which we encourage you to use as a tool to monitor your own child's dental development.  This is important because if the baby teeth are stubborn the child can end up with Shark Teeth, where the permanent teeth erupt in front of or behind the baby teeth.  Or if they come out too early the child may need spacers to save the spot for the adult tooth.  That is why it is best to start office visits at age 1.   If you have any questions please feel free to call or visit us at either our Union 908-686-2040 or Westfield 908-232-2136 office.  *Parental permission obtained for use  of photo for  The Laser Dental Group...

Children’s Oral Hygiene Is It Taken Seriously?

Image
Unfortunately, it is not. Many are raised with the idea that baby teeth don’t matter, so why bother taking care of them?’ Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Cavities on baby teeth can affect adult teeth, by causing premature loss of teeth leading to more expensive measures like orthodontics. Cavities cause significant pain to children. The most worrisome is the potential of an infection that can leave a child hospitalized. Generally, what is consumed is the major cause leading to cavities in children. Things like soda, juice, candy and even milk can cause cavities and other problems, like baby bottle syndrome. However, consumption is only one part of the preventable problem. It’s almost impossible to prevent consumption of sodas, candies and other harmful foods from sugar-hungry children.  There are two solutions:  moderation  and  hygiene . After consumption of sweets, have your child brush and floss. The motion of brushing will remove th...
